APS wide Indigenous recruitment programmes As part of the APS Employment and Capability Strategy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employees the Australian Public Service Commission coordinates centralised recruitment rounds of Indigenous graduates, cadets and trainees for employment in Australian Government Agencies.

These are positions which “require specific knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Australian cultures and issues, and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous communities. You don’t have to be an Indigenous Australian to apply for these jobs, but you do have to be able to work appropriately with Indigenous people.”
“There are also ‘special measures provisions’ in the APS that allow some jobs to be advertised as restricted to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants only in order to assist employment opportunities for Indigenous people.
APS job ads will state if the job is an identified or special measures position.”

Indigenous Career Trek delivers a range of learning and development opportunities to support career development and advancement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees at all levels in the Australian Public Service.

A cadetship is a combination of full time study and work placement. Each year cadets undertake 12 weeks of work placement with their employing agency. These work placements are normally undertaken during university breaks.
Cadets receive a wage while undertaking work placements, as well as an allowance while studying and financial assistance for text books and university fees.

Career Trek Indigenous Career Trek delivers free career and skills development programmes to APS Indigenous employees in capital cities and major regional centres across Australia.
Indigenous Scholarship Programme This is a suite of scholarships designed to enable ongoing Indigenous employees in the APS to access further professional development.
The Horizons programme This programme provides the opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Australian Public Service (APS 4-6) employees, to broaden their level of expertise and enhance career progression opportunities, through a 6 month secondment placement in another APS agency.
APS Commission Indigenous Liaison This officer is available to provide advice to agencies and Indigenous people about the Australian Public Service Employment and Capability Strategy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employees and the framework for employing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
