7 Reasons to consider a career in local government

People may overlook the diverse career opportunities available in Australia's local government because they hold out-of-date views about the role of this part of our democratic system. Gone are the days when local government was 'roads, rates and rubbish'. While these remain important functions, the work of local government is much more diverse. Council staff now build major projects from concept to completion like sports and arts facilities. You'll find accountants, HR professionals, marketing and communications staff, IT people, professionals in planning and development, environmental health, building, surveying, landcare and conservation, engineering, horticulture, recreation and leisure, libraries, aged care, child care, events coordination, youth work, foreshore management, various tradespeople, to name a few.

Here are seven reasons to consider a career in local government.

  1. Mandatory citizenship requirements usually don't apply. You may not even need to be a permanent resident to be able to apply for a local government job.
  2. You will have a close connection and make a contribution to your local community. This gives a sense of satisfaction and builds a bond with your local area.
  3. You will be doing practical roles that affect the daily lives of people. You will see direct evidence of what you are doing and know that you are helping people directly.
  4. Job diversity with opportunities to work on issues that matter.
  5. Career flexibility. You can move to other local governments in rural, regional and metropolitan Australia.
  6. Local government gives strong support for equity, diversity and family-friendly workplaces, with opportunities to work full time, part time, permanent, temporary, casual, and job share. Plus councils offer school-based traineeships and apprenticeships to help people gain entry.
  7. Personal and professional development are important in local government. Staff earn and learn. They have personal development plans and access to leadership programs.
