How to Get the Job U Want

This review gives a verdict on the book based on three options:

  • Bypass: Little of value. Give it a miss.
  • Borrow: Some value but insufficient to warrant a purchase so borrow from a library.
  • Buy: Valuable ideas and information, a worthwhile investment.

Title: How to Get the Job U Want

Subtitle:

Author: Jen Harwood

Publisher: Direct Incite Pty Ltd, http://www.getthejobuwant.com/?page_id=26

Nationality: Australian

Year: 2008

RRP: $14.95

Flavour: A short (less than 50 pages), friendly, easy to read book that would appeal to a younger audience.

The author identifies the book is for people who:

  • have never had a job before, and are embarking on the exciting journey of paid employment for the first time.
  • are unhappy with the job they are in
  • want a complete career seachange.

The book describes how the reader can create the ideal job opportunities and gives practical strategies and ideas. Areas covered include: creating a career vision and time line, changing unhelpful beliefs, building a support network, identifying your ideal employer (the book is geared to the private sector, but the information would equally apply to other sectors), building awareness of strengths and weaknesses, networking, preparing a resume and for interviews. (The author acknowledges that this isn’t a book about writing resumes.)

The information is brief, offering essential information to help a young person set off in the right direction when looking for paid employment.

Verdict: If you are a young person wanting to find out the essentials of looking for a job then this book gives you this information. It is written in a positive, encouraging style. Of particular value is the section on identifying your ideal employer. With such choice around these days, it’s wise to figure out first what sort of organisation you’d like to work in.

The book does not have an index nor a bibliography.
