Careers with the ACT Public Service
This is an edited summary of Talking Tips interview with Dr Louise Bassett, spokeswoman for the ‘Careers come with the Territory’ campaign.
What is attractive about working in the ACT public service?
The opportunity to work at a cross government level as the ACT Government provides both state and municipal functions.
People see the direct results of their work in the local community.
Flexibility and work/life balance benefits.
Is there much difference between the Commonwealth and ACT public service?
There is some difference in that the ACT employs nurses and teachers and the Commonwealth doesn’t run schools and hospitals.
Policy work is similar, as are corporate functions like accounting.
What skills are of particular interest to the ACT public service?
The ACT is experiencing a skills shortage. The main challenges are in human resources, accounting, economics and policy experts. We’re also needing general administrators, ICT trainees and graduates and specialists like town planners.
Is there much difference in the selection process?
The ACT public service is committed to merit-based selection. For policy and administrative positions the process is made up of a written application, interview and referee report. For Territory and Municipal Services positions a written application may not be needed.
What is your response to some of the negatives we hear about the ACT public service?
There is some perception that the ACT Government pays less. Analysis shows that the ACT pays about the middle of the Commonwealth salary band. In some instances the pay is better. When you combine the salary with flexibility benefits, this makes the ACT public service competitive with the Commonwealth.
How do people find out more?
