How older workers can sell themselves

This is an edited summary of Talking Tips interview with Dr Graham Jackson on how older workers can sell themselves to employers.

As a mature age worker seeking work Graham did the following:

  • He disclosed health issues but did not discuss them during interviews.
  • He did not show gaps in his work history.
  • He treated voluntary work as ‘work’.
  • He kept a positive attitude and accepted the situation.

Was voluntary work valuable?

Yes, it was extremely helpful in building confidence, building computer and people skills, and giving time to get ready for job seeking.

Graham found that during interviews he was asked scenario type questions designed to test his thinking skills. He wasn’t asked about recent or past experience, as this is known from the application. He suggests panels include more variety in their questions, with more questions testing an applicant’s enthusiasm and commitment. However he recognises that interviews are relatively impersonal and that they are designed to measure a person against selection criteria.

Graham’s tips for mature age people:

  • Be prepared to go for lots of interviews
  • Learn interview patterns and likely questions, including scenarios.
  • Study and practice the art of making statements against selection criteria.
  • Seek help with editing and commenting on your statements to selection criteria.
  • Be prepared to rewrite many times.
  • Concentrate on the interview questions.
  • Never discuss age
  • Be positive and confident.
  • Maintain an attitude of never giving in.

Should you document your full career in your resume? No, only document the last ten years.
