Job searching techniques for mature age workers

This is an edited summary of Talking Tips interview #4 with Dr Graham Jackson on how older workers can sell themselves to employers.

After taking early retirement, what methods did you use to find work:

  • part time voluntary work to build confidence and regain computer and people skills
  • registered with private employment agencies
  • read books about job seeking, such as Bolles' What color is your parachute?
  • wrote letters to some employers using names from job advertisements. The aim was not to get a job but to discuss job seeking techniques and obtain leads to possible employment. When I did this people were helpful and one letter to a senior executive resulted in three contracts.

Recruitment agencies were efficient, very encouraging. I registered with up to 12 agencies. I did not experience any age discrimination.

I worked with the Mature Age Strategy Section of the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR). This section promotes the retention, retraining and recruitment of mature age people, defined as 45 years plus.

Tips for mature age workers searching for work:

  • use a systematic approach
  • read widely on job searching techniques
  • treat it as a full time occupation, 9 to 5
  • seek help from friends
  • register with recruitment agencies
  • take short term contracts and don't worry about the pay level
  • make direct approaches to gain ideas and leads
  • avoid competing for jobs until you are well established.
